How Secure Travel Handles Pre-Existing Conditions: Plan 1 vs Plan 2

Secure Travel (operated by RIMI Insurance Solutions, underwritten by iA Financial Group) splits pre-existing handling into two plans. Plan 1 provides no pre-existing condition coverage at all, regardless of stability — usually the lower-cost route. Plan 2 applies an age-based stability review: a condition may be covered if it was stable for 90 days before the effective date (applicants age 69 and under) or 180 days (ages 70 to 84).

One important caution on Plan 2: its medical declaration is effectively all-or-nothing. If any answer does not meet the stability requirement, it can affect the entire pre-existing assessment — not just the condition in question. Secure Travel products are also not available to residents of Quebec.

Plan 2: Stability Window by Age

Applicant agePlan 2 stability requirement
69 and underStable in the 90 days before the effective date
70 to 84Stable in the 180 days before the effective date

Plan 1 has no pre-existing coverage at any age. Reflects the Secure Travel (RIMI) reviewed wording (February 2024). Not available in Quebec. Confirm current terms with your advisor.

What "Stable" Means

Most pre-existing coverage depends on a condition being "stable" for a set window before the trip — generally no new diagnosis, no medication or dosage change, no new or worsening symptoms, no pending tests, and no hospitalization. Our Pre-Existing Conditions Guide explains the full stability test; this page covers how Secure Travel specifically applies it.

What to Confirm With Secure Travel

  • Whether Plan 1 (no pre-existing coverage) or Plan 2 (stability review) fits your parent's situation.
  • The exact stability window for your parent's age (90 or 180 days) under Plan 2.
  • That every condition on the medical declaration meets the stability rule — Plan 2 is all-or-nothing.
  • Whether your family's province of residence is eligible (not available in Quebec).

FAQs

Does Secure Travel cover pre-existing conditions?

Only on Plan 2, which may cover a condition that was stable for 90 days (age 69 and under) or 180 days (ages 70 to 84). Plan 1 provides no pre-existing coverage at all.

What is the all-or-nothing declaration?

On Plan 2, the stability test applies to the whole medical declaration. If even one declared condition is not stable, pre-existing coverage may be affected for all conditions — so review the full questionnaire carefully with our advisor.

Is Secure Travel available in Quebec?

No — Secure Travel states its products are not available to residents of Quebec. Ask our advisor about other providers if your family lives in Quebec.
